FOR WINE LOVERS

Meet Sziegl family from Hajós-Baja

Tokaj is a world-renowned wine region located in Hungary, known for producing some of the finest sweet wines in the world. The region’s microclimate, created by the Bodrog and Tisza rivers, makes it ideal for the growth of botrytis or noble rot, a fungus that concentrates the grape’s sugars and imparts a distinct flavor to the wines.
The Tokaj region comprises 28 villages and covers around 5478 hectares of vineyards. It is the oldest classified wine region globally, with a history dating back to the early 18th century. The region is famous for its three main types of wines: dry wines without botrytis, Tokaji Szamorodni, and Tokaji Aszú, the most famous of which is the sweet Tokaji Aszú.
The primary grape varieties grown in the region are Furmint, Hárslevelű, Sárgamuskotály (Muscat Blanc á Petits Grains), Kabar, and Zéta. The unique soils of the region, formed from multi-level volcanic activity, add to the complexity of the wines. The soil composition varies from site to site, with sandy loess, stone dust, and brown forest soil being the most common types.
The region’s historic vineyards are usually located at higher elevations and contain stones and tuff debris. The oak barrels used to age the wines come from the nearby Zemplén Mountains, adding to the region’s unique terroir.
Tokaj is home to several renowned wineries, including Hollóvár, Lenkey, and Pelle Winery. Visitors to the region can discover the exciting terroir of Tokaj through the wines produced by these winemakers.
